Jose Pavli is a Spanish composer responsible for composing plenty of amazing music for several fairly well-known titles. He is the person behind the music of titles such as Project Wingman, UHawk, and Dawn.
Prior to this, I had already written a post about Aviation music in regards to Ace Combat already. So, why write something similar again?
In all honesty, much like the reason that I write about nearly any post, it has something that simply stood out from the conventionally heard, and managed to show itself to be notable in their composition philosophy and artistic value! Taking a step back, Jose Pavli’s “aviation music” is much more western-influenced than the more latin-esque music as heard in Ace Combat, although both still very much contains the same charm that is often entailed with the music of aviation.
I can’t emphasize enough how unique Aviation music sounds like when compared to other genres, despite them not being a genre by themselves, and Pavli’s work is a statement to such a claim. Filled with Orchestral grandeur and Invigorating Rock, not to mention the subtle nod to some traditional synths, are all an experience to listen to when they are all beautifully blended together.
As for the more western-twist, much like the instrumentation choice, although there would be a few dots or two that features the latino tint, the majority of all music composed by Pavli still holds true to their own style. With strings and orchestral percussion being the base essentials, and occasionally introducing other instrumentations that are not as conventional used in music of such nature.
It’s really not something that can be easily explained through words, and I feel as if the description I’ve typed does not give enough justice to Pavli’s work, so as I’d say on any occasion - Go listen to what he offers! I’m sure the exact thing I’m trying to describe can be felt through connecting with the music in the rawest form, and that is to physically listen, digest, and analyze the music for yourself.
Even before composing for the hit game (ace combat fan game) Project Wingman, Jose Pavli is someone that is known for creating tracks for epics, or battle themes that forcefully capture your attention. One example to look at is Galactic Battles’ main theme, for a short film that is a tribute to intergalactic epics like halo, star trek, star wars and mass effect, that bgm hits albeit a bit generic sounding, it did what it sought out to do, it set the theme and atmosphere correctly.
He soon moved on to become the main composer of Project Wingman, which I would say it’s his breakthrough. Even within the Ace Combat community, Project Wingman is hailed as a soul successor to the Ace Combat name, and to earn that sort of reputation, the game must not only have good aerial combat gameplay and a quirky and weird story, the sound track plays a major role as well, and Jose Pavli didn’t not disappoint, I would say he exceeded expectations even.
His Project Wingman tracks are nothing short of breathtaking, ranging from high octane, adrenaline pumping tracks like Showdown, King’s Court and Golden Age to tracks that instantly sets the mood and shift the tone to a more serious situation such as Kings, Peacekeeper, and Midnight light, all of them are incredible in terms of production quality and the repeating motif in them. Yes, in Project Wingmans’ ost, in 5 of them at least, have an ongoing motif for them, all played differently yet you can clearly make out the parts that are the same, this makes the soundtrack hit ever so harder.
If you’re into his works, Jose Pavli is currently working on a Film “Dawn Aerowar”, it is something similar to Project Wingman, but it takes the view of an anti hero, the dialogues from what they’ve shown in the trailer, hits every thing an Ace Combat like tribute should, dramatic and over the top lines, the dog fights look beautiful from the trailer, I would say it is a project worth funding.
